  • Activities in Mexico

    There is an enormous range of activities in Mexico and with the beautiful coastline and splendid beaches leading into the Caribbean Sea, Watersports have to be one of the best things to do. The spectacular Mayan Reef is the perfect dive site in the Caribbean whilst off the Pacific coast diving hotspots such as Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos can be found.

    All other manner of Watersports are available too and these include snorkelling, parasailing, fishing, surfing and luxury boat charters. Back on land a visit to the Mayan Ruins is one of the best activities in Mexico with these sacred sites hidden in the thick jungle.

    Golf has also become popular and is now one of the fastest growing areas of tourism with further activities to keep you busy including whale watching, wine tasting at a vineyard and kayaking in addition to enjoying one of the many festivals that are celebrated throughout the year.

  • Things to do in Mexico

    Mexico offers great diversity with lively cities and quieter cultural regions all within this famous destination and this brings with it one of the best choice of things to do anywhere in the world.

    Enjoying the coastline is one of the top 5 things to do in Mexico and with some resorts boasting as much as 14 miles of beach it's easy to see why. Watersports and swimming in the warm waters is of course popular here and when you have finished splashing around you can relax in a hammock on the beach with the sounds of the waves as your companion.

    Along with self-guided walking tours, adventure hotspots around Mexico include the Copper Canyon, Sumidero Canyon and Riviera Maya. Butterfly reserves will show you the softer side of nature whilst those looking for a thrill can try their hand at windsurfing or enjoy one of the lavish festivals.

  • Weather in Mexico

    January
    The average maximum temperature in Mexico is 23°C the average can differ over the different regions but what it does show is that most places will be warm in Mexico at this time of year especially the costal areas. There is very little rain in Mexico at this time, it’s the second driest month of the year. 

    February 
    Snow can be expected on the high interior plateau of Mexico but those heading to costal resorts will find the weather pleasant with mild conditions. February is one of the cooler months in Mexico with an average temperature of 15°C but this is for the whole country, if you are staying in the Mayan Riviera for example Cancun offers a maximum temperature of 28°C and on the pacific coast Salina Cruz has an average of 27°C. 

    March
    Expect hot, sunny days and balmy nights if visiting areas like Cancun and or beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula. Areas with lower altitude such as Mexico can expect a lower average temperature of 18°C. With the dry season still in swing there will be minimal rainfall. 

    April
    April is the last chance to enjoy the relatively dry weather before rainy season starts to kick in. The cool temperatures of Mexico City rise up to a 20°C average with Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula resorts enjoying tropical heat with days heating up to 30°C cooling down slightly in the evening. 

    May
    The rainy season starts to creep in from the south with Huatulco on the Pacific Coast receiving an average of 112mm of rain across seven days on average in May. Further north Acapulco sees just a neglible 22mm on three wet days and Cabo San Lucas remains dry. Mexico is very hot during this month with coastal areas getting an average of 30°C. Mexico City also remains dry as the rainy season doesn’t hit till further on.

    June
    The onset of the rainy season means heavy thunder-showers in the south of the country. Acapulco has an average 261.5mm of rain in June, with around 13 wet days, while further north Mazatlan is virtually dry with just 30mm and an average of three rainy days. Cancun’s temperatures hit well above 30°C with the occasional shower of rain. Mexico experiences high temperatures with high humidity but you can find cooler temperatures in the elevated central interior.  
    The beginning of hurricane season starts this month in Mexico, but the risk of a hurricane or fierce tropical storm hitting either the west or east coast this early in the season is very low.

    July
    Yucatan Peninsula is extremely hot and humid in July with monsoon style outpours later in the afternoon. Cancun and the other Yucatan resort areas have temperatures of 35°C but dropping nicely at night-time. With the rainy season now well established hurricane risk is at its worst and you will experience tropical storms at the least on the Mexican Caribbean coast. 

    There will be rain in most areas everyday but only for brief periods so there is still plenty of Sunshine. Cabo San Lucas is one of the driest with only 13mm of rain on average for July. 

    August
    Monsoon-like rains take over most of Mexico during this month with intense heat and humidity. The average maximum temperature for Cancun is 32°C and the minimum 25°C with humidity levels hovering around 78%. Conditions in Acapulco on the Pacific coast are similar. Mexico City is cooler with an average maximum temperature for August of 24°C(75°F), and humidity of 64%.

    September
    Cancun experiences highs of 31°C, and lows, at night, of around 24°C. At this time of year there is the threat of severe tropical storms or hurricanes on the Caribbean, Gulf and Pacific coasts.  218mm of rain fall on average in Cancun for the month, and heavy showers fall through late afternoon and evening. 

    October
    This is the last month of the rainy season for most regions of Mexico, with the drier winter approaching. Many locations still remain extremely hot with heavy showers throughout the evenings. Locations such as Cancun can expect 7 hours of sunshine a day. 

    November
    The wet season starts to fizzle out, you can still expect some rain but it will be greatly reduced from the months previously. Coastal areas start to cool down slightly too. Cancun has an average maximum for November of 29°C and a minimum of 22°C for this time of year. Temperatures and rainfall in other popular resorts like Puerto Vallarta are similar, and Acapulco is particularly hot, dry and humid.

    December
    Temperatures are mild to warm from the coast to the interior (but can become chilly at night time) December is a great month to go sightseeing in Mexico, because it is relatively cool but bright and sunny.

    Mexican food has always been considered as spicy, many dishes have added chilli and lime to give them a kick. Mexican food history shows that Mexico has given chocolate to the world, as well as several other specialties, including peanuts, vanilla, beans, coconuts and tomatoes.

    Mexican food incorporates these ingredients that originate from the region as well as specialities such as pork, lamb, beef, wine, vinegar and cheese brought over by the Spanish conquerors. Mexican food then evolved to contain a mixture of the old and new flavours. As Mexican food continued evolving and new ingredients became available you can find influences and ingredients originally from South America, the Caribbean and even Africa.

    The main ingredients remain the same recipe after recipe in Mexican cooking. Corn is one of the most common ingredients found in Mexican cooking. Mexicans have learned to cook almost every meal with corn. Corn flour is incorporated into a wide variety of meals including even sweets.

    Another main ingredient in Mexico is chilli. It is used to condiment several meals and is the main component of tabasco hot sauce. Chili con Carne is a typical Mexican dish involving chilli. 

    When in Mexico make sure to try classic dishes such as Chilaquiles (fried tortilla chips cooked with eggs, salsa, and cheese), Huevos rancheros (spicy Mexican eggs) and Pozole (traditional pre-Columbian soup)

    Sweet dishes include Churros (sweet Mexican fritters) often dipped in Mexican hot chocolate and Tres Leches Cake (sponge cake made with three different types of milk).

  • Mexico Holidays

    Mexico City is the largest city in the world and is the financial, political and cultural center of México. Home to world class museums, incredible international cuisine, colonial neighbourhoods and dazzling nightlife, Mexico City has everything you could want from a long city break.

    To get a feel for the city head to Bellini, the biggest revolving restaurant in the world. Wherever you sit you can enjoy panoramic views of the entire city while you eat. Head to La Central de Abasto to visit the biggest wholesale market in the world and pick up a delicious Quesadilla to eat as you go around.

    Zócalo (the city’s main square) is well worth a visit. From here you can visit the Presidental Palace and the Catedral Metropolitana. Aztec dancers play traditional music throughout the square, it is the perfect place to grab a Mexican hot chocolate and some Churros (Mexican fritters covered in sugar). 

    The city has wide selection of night-time activities including ballet, opera, folklore shows, bars and nightclubs. Live Cuban music and tropical salsa clubs are always popular throughout the city. For a cultural outing head to Casa Azul (Blue House), renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s home that she was born in and lived in all her life. The house has now become a museum housing the artists’ work as well as mementos and personal belongings of the artist.  

    For a taste of authentic Mexico head to family run eatery El Hidalguense. To start sample the rich consume or queso asado (grilled cheese with herbs). For mains try their famous tacos and to drink try Pulque an alcoholic drink made from the fermented sap of the maguey plant.

    Ixtapa is filled with glorious beaches, luxurious hotels and well-manicured golf courses. Ixtapa is perfect for travellers who want a hassle-free all-inclusive beach getaway and golf enthusiasts looking for that relaxing golf holiday. 

    For dinner head to Rossy’s for some delicious waterfront dining. The extensive menu features some Mexican favourites such as ceviche, shrimp dishes, and fish fillets served with rice and steamed vegetables.   • Tulum Holidays

    80 miles from Cancun and the last stop on the Yucatán Peninsula’s Riviera Maya. Known as a bohemian paradise that remains largely untouched compared to some of the large chains that dominate this part of Mexico, Tulum is a truly special destination.

    For eateries a must visit is Tulum’s most famous restaurant Hartwood.  Sustainability is key in this establishment, solar panels power everything in the entire restaurant and food waste is used to create organic compost.  All dishes are cooked on an open fire with all fish hunted by spears in traditional Mayan techniques. As everything is fresh and caught on the day the menu can vary every time you visit, but you’re certainly in for a delicious experience!

    If shopping is your thing head to Shalom Boutique with a beautiful collection of curated bohemian chic styles. Mixik is perfect for hand crafted souvenirs and beautiful decorations for the home. If you want to explore off the beaten path head to one of the lesser-known archeological sites Ek’ Balam. This is a great site to explore and you can still climb all of the ruins. 

    Other attractions worth visiting are the Gran Cenote one of the beautiful pools that adorns Mexico’s landscape. Ka’an Luum offers a serene swimming experience in a turquoise lagoon where you can spot colourful tropical fish. Snorkelling amidst stalactites and stalagmites at one of the cave-covered cenotes like Dos Ojos is also not to be missed.

  • Puerto Vallarta

    Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s liveliest and sophisticated resort destinations. Puerto Vallarta stretches around the sparkling blue bay of flags and is surrounded by gorgeous palm covered mountains, the perfect place to relax and admire the natural beauty around you.

    The stunning beaches have a wide array of bars, curio shops, markets and a stunning variety of places to eat from delicious restaurants to seaside taco stands. Banderas Bay has over 40 kilometres of coastline. In the south head to Conchas Chinas for tropical sands and secluded tide pools. In the North is Playa de Oro which is great for watersports and has perfect waves for surfing.

    In between the two is Los Muertos, the cities most visited beach. With lots of restaurant-bars on offer and mariachi bands playing across the golden sands this is the perfect beach to get you in the party mood. 
    The pedestrianised Malecon is the heart of the city. Start at the fishermen’s market and continue down to the amphitheatre where you can watch nightly folk dancing and clown shows. As you make your way down the Malecon you will see some of the musicians and street artists performing, look out for some amazing sand sculptures and bronze statues. 

    If you want to see some of the traditional Mexican handicrafts visit the ceramic tile shops along the Malecon. Many of the stores will put on glass blowing demos and show you some of the traditional techniques that they use on their tiles. Visit the tequila distilleries in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains and get a walk-through of the cooking, fermenting, distilling and ageing process of the tequilas. Afterwards you will be able to sample some of the tequila that they produce.
