Oaxaca has been named a UNESCO world heritage site due to the beauty and harmony of its architecture. The Zócalo square in the city is said to be one of the most beautiful central squares in Mexico. The square is home to the government palace as well as restaurants, terraces and coffee houses. Visit one of the cafes and try some of the local drinks such as café de olla (coffee made with cinnamon and cane sugar) or Mezcal with lemon.
Visit Andador Turistico (Tourist Boulevard) for a trip to the contemporary art museum. After the museum walk down the boulevard and look at some colonial houses as you walk by. You will also encounter various galleries, restaurants, and the most distinguished jewellery and handcraft stores. As you come to the end of the boulevard take in the Santo Domingo Temple. Head inside to appreciate its impressive interior decoration.
There are many markets to visit in the city but its most famous is the 20 de Noviembre (20th November) market. At the start of the market you will find traditional Mexican snacks such as chicharrones (Mexican pork scratchings, salted meats and thinly sliced grilled beef). At the end of the market are eateries serving up traditional dishes such as pieces of cured meat served with eggs in sauce, chicken mole enchiladas and black bean and chicken chilaquiles.
Oaxaca has over 4,000 archaeological sites surrounding the area. It’s well worth taking a visit to see some of the amazing architecture that has been uncovered in the area. Some of the sites to visit include Dainzú, Huijazoo, Lambityeco, Mitla and San José el Mogote.
