Merida has no rivers or lakes on its surface so relies on various underground rivers and cenotes to supply the city with its water. Merida is home to beautiful architecture, delicious cuisine as well as stunning natural scenery. Take some time to watch a folk dancing performance, dancers perform their graceful dances whilst wearing delicate costumes embroided with colourful flowers of the region.

Merida was founded in 1542 on the Mayan dwelling of T’ho. The Spanish arrived and named the city Merida because of the similarities between this city and one that exists in the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish destroyed T’ho and used the stones from the temples to erect their colonial style buildings which are still standing to this day. These buildings can be visited on a historic walking tour in the downtown district of Merida.

Merida offers everything from museums, parks, markets, shopping malls and boutiques to visit in the day. At night Merida lights up with cafes, fine restaurants, concerts, discos and nightclubs, take a night ride in a horse and carriage to capture the sights of the city.

Merida's cuisine is a blend of traditional Mayan cooking with European influences. Try some local dishes including cochinita pibil (a slow-roasted pork dish), sopa de lima (chicken soup with lime) and a selection of fish and seafood specialities.

Merida has lots to offer but is also near other natural jewels such as the underground cave systems of Lol-tun and Balankanche. You can also go on nearby adventure journeys into Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Dzibilchaltun.
