Start by landing in the captivating city of Oaxaca. Take some time to visit the city’s charming plazas, ornate buildings and sculpted churches. Learn about the creative history of the city with a visit to Museum of the Oaxacan Cultures.
Visit the nearby town of Tlacolula for market day, this market sells traditional wares including woven Zapotec rugs and red pottery pieces. After visit the ancient village of Santo Domingo Tomaltepe to see the traditional Day of the Dead bread being made and prepared.
The next day head to the Day of the Dead ‘tiangus’ at the Abastos Market. Browse the stalls filled with Day of the Dead ornaments and decorations including colourful strings of beads, bunches of vibrant marigolds and the iconic illustrated sugar skulls. At 11pm head over one of the nearby towns to witness a traditional wake, drink hot chocolate and eat some of the traditional Day of the Dead bread.
Continue onto the village cemetery and witness families decorating the graves of their loved ones. Take in the unique atmosphere of joyous remembrance mixed with a macabre sadness. The next afternoon visit the village of Soledad Etla to witness the magnificent Comparsa Parade. The Comparsa Parade is a vibrant parade where 10 foot stilt walkers dress as spirits and walk down the main road while marching bands play loud ‘banda’ music and locals dress up in elaborate costumes.
Visit the village of San Bartolo Coyotepec, famous for black pottery known as barro negro, and the famed potter Carlo Magno Pedro who specialises in Day of the Dead art. Take this opportunity to pick up a souvenir for your memorable trip.
