San Miguel de Allende has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its stunning buildings and beautiful scenery. The town is named after General Ignacio Allende who was a prominent figure in Mexico’s War of Independence. The town’s history dates back to 1542 where it played an important part in the country’s silver trade.

San Miguel de Allende is known for its well preserved colonial and Spanish architecture. Visit the Parroquia de San Miguel Archangel, the tallest building in the city. The pink limestone building is said to be inspired by the Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. There is an old tale that architect Zeferino Gutierrez used a postcard of the Sagrada Familia to help plan out the building.

The shopping in the town is a mix of souvenir shops, modern boutiques and old stores like pharmacy Botica De Santa Teresita that has been serving the people of San Miguel de Allende for centuries.

San Miguel de Allende is gaining a reputation as a foodie destination. Aperi at Dos Casas is thought to be one of the best, try the sea bass, suckling pig and chocolate extravaganza for the ultimate taste experience.
